Back in the 1970’s, the Europeans desired smaller sized cars. This demand came from car buyers, and although Ford’s smallest car at the time, the Escort, was selling, the competition was producing smaller, front wheel drive vehicles that were attracting attention. The energy crisis that took place in the 70’s only augmented the demand for smaller cars. The mini car market was open to all car manufacturers that competed with each other to get consumer attention by releasing different models. Ford’s project, called “Bobcat” had a team that came up with numerous names for the new vehicle that was going to be produced with a longer wheelbase, but an overall shorter length. Henry Ford II decided to go with the name “Fiesta”, but even some of the other names on the shortlist were applied to other models, such as the Sierra. The Ford Fiesta has changed a lot over the years in Ford style and Ford safety. Modern day Ford Fiestas have new technologies not seen before in older models. An ECOnetic model was even in the makings, and this model produces less carbon dioxide and utilizes a 1.6 Duratorq TDCi engine. This environmentally friendly Ford Fiesta model is not available in the United States. There is debate on whether the vehicle would sell and whether or not the company would make money, but modern day attitude has changed, and people believe that global warming is contributing to atmospheric changes and that cars are contributing to this problem. An innovative development like the Fiesta ECOnetic may sell extremely well as people are wanting to go “hybrid”. Only time will tell, if this model may make its appearance, but for now Americans have a 5-door hatchback and a 4 door sedan option for body style involving the Ford Fiesta.
